HOW DID CROSSFIT LADY NAME WODS START?
You might be wondering how CrossFit lady name WODs came to be.
It’s no secret that CrossFit has a rich and complex culture attached to it.
But something shocking yet incredibly powerful is the fact that this culture comes its own dictionary of words and vocabulary of terms.
Something you may have picked up on is the fact that a lot of workouts tends to be associated with female names.
The CrossFit lingo culture can be extremely interesting and unusual at times so it is no stranger to occasional confusion.
It’s not surprising that the lingo can be hard to pick up if you are new to the CrossFit culture and start hearing things like ‘AMRAP’, ‘Pukie the Clown’ and ‘Uncle Rhabdo’.
But unlike terms such as ‘ass to the grass’ meaning get low or ‘AMRAP’ meaning ‘as many reps / rounds as possible’, we can’t quite put our finger on why women’s names are used so often for the workouts.
Our inquisitive nature has led us to explore the CrossFit playbook a little further and dig deeper to establish why there are so many lady names for workouts and where all of this originated.
What we found was truly interesting.
Let’s explore further and take a look at some of the exercises.
What we uncovered was a general naming technique, sectioning the workouts into categories and split based on OLD, NEW & THE REST.
'The Old' CrossFit Lady Name Workouts
These CrossFit lady name WODs are named after hurricanes and this is very fitting to the style of exercise they are – quite chaotic and intense.
Most of these will be the classic and iconic WODs that we all come to hate... and secretly love.
Names like Fran, Grace, Helen, Karen are some that immediately come to mind when referring to the 'OG' lady name workouts.
'The New' Girl Workouts
These are the workouts of the like of; Nicole, Annie, Eva, and Lynne.
These particular workouts are named after significant women Crossfitters and there is significance in that they are an ode to those who have found such success in the CrossFit industry.
Like the 'old' girl workouts, these WOD's are just brutal.
BRUTAL!!!!
They come at you like a runaway freight train, and sometimes you escape, and sometimes you don't.
But, what an honour right to have a workout named after you, right?
'The Rest'
Even though this article is about the CrossFit lady name workouts, not all follow this naming strategy.
Some have instead been named after recent military and police heroes.
There are a few that also have unique names that describe them like “Tabata This!”, “Fight Gone Bad”, and the CrossFit Total.
The "Filthy Fifty" is another legendary WOD that is filthier than the name implies. And whenever there's 50 of anything in the workout, nothing more needs to be said.
Our Favorite CrossFit Lady Name WODs
Now we wanted to dig a little deeper and explore some of our favourite CrossFit workouts with lady names.
Fran - The Most Iconic CrossFit Lady Name EVER
Don’t let the sweet name fool you.
This is one of the cases when a woman named workout means pain.
The Fran is known as perhaps one of CrossFit’s most famous of all workouts.
It is a 21-15-9 rep scheme of thrusters and pull-ups.
This killer workout featured 21 thrusters and 21 pull-ups, followed by 15 thrusters and 15 pull ups, and so on.
Trust us, the first time you do this one will be a time to remember.
Grace
In this crazy exercise athletes must complete 30 clean & jerks at 135 pounds AND do it as fast as possible.
It’s like a sprint, but with a barbell.
And it's WAAAAAAAAY harder than it looks. You'll be gasping for air for at least 5 minutes afterwards.
Isabel
So this one is pretty much the same as Grace, only it is 30 snatches for time, instead of the clean & jerks.
Of course we still have Annie, Angie, Barbara and Chelsea with stories to tell that fit in with this naming technique we identified.
So next time you’re thinking ‘these ladies just won’t let up’ you can recall back to this article and remember the meaning behind these gender driven workout names.
