THE 9 BENEFITS OF DOING CROSSFIT

If you’re here, you probably think CrossFit is awesome. But no matter how much you love something, there are times where you don’t love it so much.

Especially something as tough as CrossFit.

Maybe you just had a really rough WOD, and you’re contemplating why you give up your evenings and weekends for something that just makes you sore and a little pukey.

We’re here to give you a little pick me up. CrossFit is awesome for so many reasons, so let’s take a look at some of the many benefits of CrossFit.

Better Sex

Just what you came to a CrossFit blog for… the birds and the bees talk.

It’s just science.

Studies show that the more physically active you are, the more stamina and fun you are going to have in the bedroom (or any room, we don’t judge).

The effects of physical exercise, and therefore CrossFit, on your sex life is positive in both a physical and mental way.

Physically, by doing CrossFit you’re building muscles and burning fat.

This change in your body composition helps increase blood flow in your body, allowing for better sexual function.

Mentally, working out increases hormonal release that in turn boosts mental arousal in both men and women.

With that being said, the biggest change you will get from CrossFit is an improved self-perception.

Through completing difficult physical tasks like we do in CrossFit, we start to think higher of our body and what it can do.

This leads to an increase in confidence, which is a massively important thing in the bedroom.

There you go… we just gave you the talk your parents never did.

Physical Health

This one is a no-brainer.

If you spend hours (or even minutes, as some of those short CrossFit WODs are killer) a week doing an insane amount of reps of squats, deadlifts, pullups, burpees, and snatches, you’re gonna get fit.

There’s no way around it.

Even if you love your chips and beer, you’re going to be in better shape than you were before.

If you really think about it, doing CrossFit is like a ‘get out of jail free’ card. You can eat junk food and sit around a little without feeling bad about yourself… within reason.

What really separates CrossFit from a lot of high-intensity physical exercise (think weight lifting, basketball, soccer, etc.) is that it combines both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training into a workout.

Thanks to the high reps and speed of the workouts, you’re building muscles and your endurance at the same time. All without taking 3 hours out of your day.

Emotional Health

One of the biggest benefits of CrossFit is how it helps with emotional health.

All exercise plays a massive role in how we feel. For thousands of years, us humans had to move to accomplish anything.

Hunting, fishing, collecting fruit, building; everything required us to use our body.

Now, lots of what we do is accomplished while sitting in front of a computer screen. All of that sitting around is not completely natural (I say, while sitting in front of my computer screen writing this).

Studies have found that exercise helps moderate our hormones, and therefore our emotions.

By doing CrossFit, you trigger a release of the group of hormones called Endorphins, also known by their scientific name ‘smiley feelies’.

Much like their scientific name implies, these guys are in charge of you feeling happy. Even a small amount of daily physical activity can cause a massive boost in endorphins in your brain.

So just imagine what CrossFit is doing for your emotional health.

The feeling of accomplishment after a particularly hard workout in addition to the release of endorphins can create happiness highs.

Of course there are going to be lows with CrossFit as well.

But the more you do, the better you feel about yourself, and the better off you will be in the long run.

Higher Chance of Survival in a Zombie Apocalypse

Finally, you think to yourself, now we’re getting to the important stuff.

Damn straight. Enough of this emotional and physical health blabber, let’s talk zombie apocalypse and your rate of survival.

Here’s a hard truth: If you are physically unfit, you’re probably not going to survive too long on the run from a zombie hoard. In fact, you’ll be a part of that hoard after a few minutes.

The good news: CrossFit vastly improves your chances of survival. You could argue it increases your chance of survival more than anything outside of medieval weaponry expertise or military training.

There are three major physical traits you’ll need in the case of a zombie apocalypse: speed, strength, and endurance.

Speed and endurance are needed for keeping ahead of the zombies, while strength is going to be essential while clubbing zombies when they happen to corner you.

Lucky for you, you’re a diehard CrossFitter, and running from a horde of zombies is nothing compared to doing what feels like 500 burpees in a row directly after doing 5 sets of 10-rep snatches. That’s child’s play.

Do CrossFit, survive a zombie apocalypse. Simple as that.

Reduce Chance of Injury

Despite what people who know nothing about CrossFit will tell you, it actually decreases your chances of injury.

A common misconception about CrossFit is that when you sign up, you’re basically signing up to have a horrifying injury.

Maybe two or three, if you’re really lucky.

Wrong. In life, lots of injuries come from a weak core or a muscle-weight imbalance. CrossFit helps with both of those problems.

Most exercises in your WOD at the very minimum activate your core, which is the belt of muscles around your torso.

More than likely, that belt is dead tired after each workout. The core is the center of your body’s balance, so if it’s stronger, you’re not going to lose your balance and fall or twist an ankle or knee.

CrossFit is also going to increase your muscle mass while reducing the amount of fat you have, which will help you get closer to the ideal muscle-weight ratio.

If that ratio gets too out of whack, your chances of ligament and muscle-related injuries increases.

Perhaps the biggest injury-related benefit of CrossFit isn’t immediate.

As we get older, our bones weaken. This is a natural process, and one that happens to some degree no matter how hard you fight it.

What is important is that we grow our bones while we are young so they can breakdown without becoming brittle.

Bone growth occurs through stressing the bones. This is done through giving the bones short deadlines for massive projects in a field they barely know anything about.

Just kidding, bones are stressed and grow through lifting heavy things. As we lift, the muscles bend and break the bones a small amount. The bones heal, stronger than before.

So by doing CrossFit, we’re reducing the chance of falling and breaking a hip later in life.

CrossFit Community

There is no worse feeling than trying to hold a conversation with someone who you share absolutely no interests with. Unfortunately, it seems to happen every day.

There are a lot of different interests out there, and every single person you run into seems to only know of the 10 most boring ones.

‘Look, Susan, this has been a great 45 minute conversation about your 6 favorite types of fabrics to sew with’, you say to Susan, lying through your teeth.

‘Do you have any other interests? Like CrossFit? My muscles are killing me. I just had a super tough workout yesterday and–’

‘Wait wait wait. You didn’t let me finish my story’, interjects Susan, heedlessly ignoring your attempt to change the subject.

‘Sure, I told you my top 6 FAVORITE types of fabrics to sew with, but I really need to tell you about my top 23 LEAST FAVORITE sewing fabrics.’

‘Please, Susan’, You say, clenching your fists in anger. ‘Please, no more sewing talk, I–’

‘Just wait until I tell you about Polyester, that little fella is one heck of a doozie.’

You’ve probably had a few conversations like this in your lifetime, and wanted to be falling off of a cliff instead. Nobody wants to talk to you about sewing, Susan.

In everyday life, it’s pretty likely that most people don’t want to talk to you about CrossFit, either.

A big part of CrossFit is that everyone at your Box loves CrossFit. Nobody is going to put themselves through that because they hate it.

If people share a love of CrossFit, they’re probably going to share many other interests as well.

All of these mutual interests create an awesome community that you can rely on every week.

Add in the shared difficult experience of all of those killer WODs, and that community becomes ever more closeknit.

One of the best things about CrossFit is that it can become a second home.

Mental Health

All of the different types of health are interconnected.

That means if CrossFit helps so much with physical and emotional health, it’ll help with mental health as well.

Research into school-aged kids showed that those who regularly exercised had better memories, math skills, and problem-solving abilities than their peers who were sedentary all day.

That same trend carries into adulthood.

In other words, CrossFit makes you smart. Or at least not as dumb. It’s just a sport, not a miracle worker.

It improves your focus, memory, and ability to solve problems.

So even though we give up our free time to go to the Box, we still get more done than a person who just heads home because of our increased productivity.

It Can Teach You To Count Properly

Key word: CAN. Not WILL, but CAN.

In CrossFit you need to count all the time. It’s kind of important.

You need it to count how many cycles of a circuit you do and to make sure you do the right number of reps before you move on to another exercise.

And yet a lot of CrossFitters still don’t seem to know how to count. They must not have paid enough attention in elementary school.

In CrossFit, counting improperly can lead to a lot of trouble.

You wouldn’t want to accidentally screw up counting your reps and do less than you’re supposed to. That would be really bad.

That would make it seem like you finished your workout in less time than you actually did, which would lead to people thinking you’re a better CrossFitter than you are.

It’s also, you know, cheating. So ya, it’s really important you know how to count properly.

There seems to be a few people who screw up counting in every CrossFit gym. People who, accidentally or otherwise, always manage to finish their WODs quicker than expected.

Almost like they did 18 reps per exercise instead of 20.

Every single time. Accidentally.

Those poor people, still unable to count as an adult.

Clearly they need to do more physical activity (such as a few more reps in their WOD) to increase their math skills.

It’s Fun!

It can be easy to forget sometimes, but the biggest benefit of Crossfit is that it is fun!

Even with the numerous other physical and mental benefits, the most important thing about CrossFit is how enjoyable you find it.

It is fun to compete, and get better, and make friends along the way. Never forget that.

And if you’re ever feeling unmotivated before a WOD, just imagine the zombie apocalypse starts tomorrow, and you’re enemy #1 for the zombie horde.

There’s some good, clean motivation.
