Bruce Beaton is one of the top Masters CrossFit athletes in the world and an all-around badass. He is also someone that we at WOD Recovery are proud to sponsor and support in his CrossFit goals, as we are proud to announce that Bruce is one of our newest ambassadors.

Let’s take a look into what makes Bruce, Bruce.

Who Is BRUCE BEATON?

Born and raised in Canada and recently relocated to Irvine, California, in the past few years Bruce (hockey nickname is Beats) has risen up the ranks of the CrossFit world. Although he has only been in CrossFit for a few years, Bruce has already made a name for himself in the Masters circuit, finishing 28th in the Open and then 32nd in the AGOQ (Age Group Online Qualifier).

beginnings

Like most Canadians, Bruce spent much of his childhood on the ice, playing high-level hockey throughout his youth. This stoked his competitive spirit and created a love and a passion for physical fitness, competition, and health.

Whatever he did while growing up, Bruce wanted to be the best at it. Now, that drive to succeed has brought him to the biggest stage in CrossFit.

personal life

Like we mentioned above, Bruce is a certified badass. All summer long (and basically anytime there is not a monsoon), you can find him ripping up the highways on his Harley. At 55 years old, Bruce still enjoys hockey, is an avid golfer, and loves to spend time with his wife and his 3 kids, who are 30, 20, and 13.

Good bourbon, good cigars, and good fun, are three things he always makes time for when not in the CrossFit box.

Bruce is an overall awesome guy, and someone we at WOD Recovery are proud to support.

getting into crossfit

Bruce first discovered CrossFit while struggling through another boring workout at a typical “Globo Gym”.

He heard the cheers of camaraderie and the clunk of weights from the room next door, and went to check it out. The group inside were climbing ropes, lifting big barbells, and loving every minute of it! Bruce was instantly in, and only later did he discover it was CrossFit that he was in on.

He was  almost 50 at the time of his first CrossFit class.

Since then, Bruce has invested himself into the sport and gotten back even more.

CROSSFIT GAMES

from amateur to professional

After first picking up CrossFit in 2015, Bruce has had a parabolic growth curve in the sport. Despite being someone who has confessed to never doing a gymnastic movement or a deadlift in his life, Bruce has quickly made a name for himself.

In 2018, 3 ½ years after he first stepped into the CrossFit box, Bruce turned his fitness journey into a drive for a professional CrossFit career. This past year he finished 2nd in Canada in the CrossFit Open for his age group. This opened even more doors for Bruce in the CrossFit world, and he gladly stepped through them.

training, training, training

Since the start, Bruce has dedicated himself to his training.

He trains once a day, typically for 2-3 hours at a time. This training typically starts with a class WOD, which he does with his fellow athletes. From there, he works on his weaknesses with his coach, who helped to develop a program tailored specifically to Bruce’s weaknesses.

Perhaps as important as Bruce’s own dedication is the dedication of his family.

Bruce’s wife bought into the Beaton family love of CrossFit. She trained in the same gym and began to research past Open results, and became Bruce’s analytics and strategy expert, helping Bruce prepare for his competitions. She even became a certified CrossFit judge, helping Bruce get the most out of his workouts. Most importantly of all, she is a constant source of love and inspiration for Bruce, being his biggest cheerleader both in and out of the CrossFit box.

Also, she’s reluctantly ‘fine’ with Bruce spending WAY too much money on CrossFit gear, which is a sure sign of a keeper.

the hard work pays off

Since he first started competing seriously in 2019, Bruce has raked up a resume of CrossFit successes that anyone would be proud of.

Bruce competed in the online qualifiers for the Atlas Games in 2019 and 2020 and successfully qualified.

Like we said, he came 2nd in Canada in the 2020 Open.

That earned him an auto invite to the Canwest Games in Vancouver which was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID.

He finished 28th in the 2020 AGOQ.

He earned a spot in the West Coast Classic, which was also cancelled due to COVID.

He participated in the 2020 Wodapalooza Gauntlet.

He recently qualified in 10th place in the Legends Masters Competition in December of 2020.

All of that in under a year since he joined his first professional competition. Bruce worked hard, and he reaped the rewards of it.

But Bruce still has a long way to go to reach his goals, and he has been putting in the hard work to make it happen.

Next up, he has the goal of winning the Legends Masters this December. After that, he wants to finish 1st in Canada in the CrossFit Open and then qualify for the CrossFit Games in 2021.

BODY RECOVERY

how bruce beaton recovers

Bruce recognizes the fact that while working hard in a WOD is important, working hard to recover plays just as a big of a role in his performance.

A long-time advocate of the benefits of CBD as a pain relief product and a sleep aid, Bruce knows that when it comes to recovery, you want the best of the best. That is why he chose to partner with WOD Recovery Rx, as he claims they are second to none in getting him feeling his best after a particularly intense workout.

be like bruce

Bruce is not done with CrossFit. In fact, he is just getting started.

Bruce never let the fact that he picked up the sport later in life stop him, and neither should you. No matter what you are going through or what obstacles stand in your way, be like Bruce and keep pushing through. Put your head down, embrace the grind, and go kick some ass!
