DEAR BURPEES, WE STILL HATE YOU… SINCERELY, EVERYONE

crossfit burpees

Unless you’ve never worked out much, or have never done CrossFit before, then you’ve undoubtedly experienced the worst movement known to man… burpees.

There’s a reason why they are programmed in soooo many wods.

They are truly a soul destroyer.

There’s no other way to explain them except for that they suck.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve gone down on the first half of a burpee and you ponder just staying down on the ground and calling it a day.

Or are we the only ones???

(If you are the kind of person who actually likes burpees, please get yourself checked out immediately.)

Nevertheless, it seems our coaches have them in tons of workouts, and they keep telling us ‘they are good for the soul’.

Most of us would disagree with that. 😉

So if we hate them with a passion, there has to be a reason why we keep having to do them.

That’s what we’re going to discuss below.

What’s The Deal With Burpees Anyway?

The burpee is the staple of any bodyweight training routine, so doing them in CrossFit is no exception.

Burpees are total-body, body-weight exercises that can be used to develop all-around muscular endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

If you don’t know what a burpee is, the simple explanation is to go from standing up, to laying flat, to standing back up again, as quick as possible.

As you get more fatigued, the first half of the burpee gets easier… which is getting down to the floor.

Getting back up, that’s another story.

They are named after American physiologist Royal H. Burpee.

His last name might as well have been (fill in whatever death adjective here).

The burpee was designed to assess the fitness of World War II soldiers.

Thank goodness burpees aren’t used to assess the fitness levels in CrossFit. 🙌

Burpee Basics

While the movement seems simple in theory, it’s actually complex.

It’s important to keep your core tight and do each section of the burpee with a purpose.

You want to get down into a push up position on the floor in the most efficient way possible.

The best way is to kick your legs back while at the same time landing horizontally in a push up position, then riding that down to the floor.

Going down in one fluid motion is ideal.

Getting back up from the floor in the same efficient manner is where the real payoff happens.

With a tight core and strong upper body, you bounce back up and kick your legs forward using your core and hips.

You want to land as vertical as possible so you can explode up for your jump.

Burpee Benefits

The burpee is a full body strength training exercise and the ultimate example of functional fitness.

With every rep, you’re working your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings and abs.

Since we do them all the time (thanks coaches), we also get the benefits in our triceps, obliques, shoulders, and calves as well.

And let’s not forget the cardio benefits.

Nothing will get your cardio training into high gear like doing a ton of burpees in a wod.

After about 20 in a row, you can’t breathe and you start questioning why you’re doing this to yourself.

But as you fight through and keep going, you train your body, and mind, to go to a dark place and keep fighting.

And the benefits you get in your cardio performance are insane.

Burpee Recovery with WOD Recovery

Doing a ton of burpees will absolutely beat your body up and leave you in pain.

How you recover your body afterwards will greatly increase your performance over time.

We recommend our athlete formulated hemp-derived CBD oil for the ultimate body recovery.

CBD oil is perfect for body recovery because it has the ability to help reduce the discomfort caused by damage to the tissues and leave you feeling relaxed rather than exhausted after a big workout.

CBD oil contains anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that many athletes use to their benefit.

This makes CBD oil the perfect treatment for cramps or sore muscles caused by burpees.

It is also favored over opioid-based alternatives because CBD is non-addictive.
