9 MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES FOR ANY CROSSFITTER

crossfit-gift-2-1024x683

You walk into your CrossFit Box. It’s a few days past Christmas, and your first workout since the big day.

You really need to get this WOD in, because you ate what seems like 3 entire turkeys and a small farms worth of potatoes since the last time you did anything that could be considered ‘physically active’.

A few minutes into warm-up and you already feel like you’re about to pass out.

Your blood seems to be made purely from gravy, and your heart isn’t what it used to be a week ago.

Pukie the Clown hovers over you, gleefully waiting for the inevitable moment that you sprint to the bathroom.

Despite the difficulty of moving, you’re glad to be there.

Because you got some new gear for Christmas, and there is nothing a CrossFitter loves more than showing off their new CrossFit accessories to their friends at the gym.

Just try not to get any regurgitated turkey on them.

Here are the top 9 must-have accessories every CrossFitter should have so that they can at least feel like Mat Fraser and Tia-Claire Toomey, even if they’re not quite performing like them yet.

A CrossFit-Related Shirt/ Shorts/Tights

The WOD after Christmas is basically a fashion show.

Everyone shows up in their new clothes and accessories, excited to sweat and test out their new gear.

Every CrossFitter needs some sort of CrossFit-related shirt.

Preferably dry-fit (to show off the chiseled abs), and definitely with a funny caption or badass slogan stamped across it.

And what new CrossFit outfit would be complete without new workout shorts or tights?

Ones that allow you to have a full range of motion in your workout, but make you look good while doing it.

Don’t even pretend: You love new gear.

And no fresh gear is more noticeable than an entire new outfit that screams CROSSFIT at the top of its lungs.

Olympic Lifting Shoes (Stiff Soled Shoes)

Have you ever noticed that professional CrossFit athletes don’t wear basketball shoes while working out?

Neither do strongmen or any other Olympic or heavy-lifting athletes. There’s a reason for this.

Basketball shoes, and other similar shoes, are incredibly counterproductive to squatting, deadlifting, and any other exercises that require you to lift heavy things with your legs.

They are designed to put your weight on your toes, so you are constantly in a position to jump and run.

This is really good for most sports, and even has its benefits in some parts of CrossFit, but the pros are greatly outweighed by the cons.

When doing most compound lifts, you need the majority of your weight on your heels to get the most out of your body.

With Olympic lifting shoes, which have a raised heel to force your weight onto the back of your foot, you are primed to get more out of your lifts.

If you want to up your CrossFit game or commonly find yourself falling forward and face planting into walls, Olympic lifting shoes may be for you.

On second thought, if you find yourself constantly face planting into walls, they are DEFINITELY for you.

Chalk

Now that we’re through the essential, barebones outfit, we’re onto the single most important accessory known to CrossFit-kind: Chalk.

The #1 love in the lives of every CrossFit warrior.

Sure, maybe your CrossFit gym provides some chalk, but is it really enough?

They provide enough chalk for you to dust up your hands before a set of cleans or snatches, but what about chalking up your forearms too?

Or maybe your calves need a little chalk on them before doing medicine ball slams because they’re feeling left out.

So you need your own chalk.

Odds are, your coach is going to look at you funny if they catch you using the gym chalk to add grip to the bottom of your shoes before hopping on the Assault Bike, but if you use your own chalk… they’re still gonna look at you weird.

Water Bottle

Water is the single most essential thing (unless you’re an Oxygen fan) to life on earth.

It is the basis for our food system, our ecosystem, and even the only reason that we now exist.

Remove water from our planet and we are dead within days.

If all of that “essential to life as we know it” stuff is not important enough for you, then consider that in the 1995 film Waterworld, water covers 99% the entire planet.

Ya, life seems pretty bad for the people living on the Waterworld, but at least they’re alive.

If the movie was called Landworld and dry land covered 99% of the planet, nothing could live on it. So really, Waterworld is the lesser of two evils.

In CrossFit, you lose a lot of water while working your ass off in the WOD.

Sweat is your friend. With all of that water leaving your system, you need a quick and reliable source of water to replenish those lost fluids.

The most reliable is the good old, handy-dandy, water bottle.

Fill it up before you head off to the gym and you’re guaranteed to have some H2O on hand.

Foam Roller (PVC Pipe)

The foam roller is an essential piece of recovery equipment for every sport.

By rolling your sore and tired muscles out, you do something called myofascial release.

This is a science-y word for separating your skin and your fascia, which is a layer under the skin that attaches muscles and accounts for a lot of your inability to squat down in the morning.

Rolling out your muscles eliminates scar tissue and soft-tissue (skin) adhesion in your muscles, making them relax.

If you have never rolled out your muscles after a workout, do it.

It may be a little painful while you’re doing it, but you will notice the positive results in your recovery time immediately.

NoteBook (Fitness Book or WOD Book)

There is an unwritten rule in weight-training that to see proper results, you need to write them down and record your workouts.

Yes, we know that we just said there is an unwritten rule that is just “write stuff down”, and we understand that it seems like a bit of a paradox, but it is true.

Studies have found that people who write down small, attainable goals and keep track of their progress are much more likely to progress at a fast rate.

This is partially due to us being able to look back at where we came from and see how far we have come.

This is especially true in CrossFit because sometimes, CrossFit can be tough.

You can have an awful WOD and feel like your CrossFit abilities have gone off of the deep end.

If you diligently keep a Fitness notebook, you can look back at your past few years of pain and success and realize, no, you didn’t just magically lose all of your abilities like some B-movie CrossFit version of Space Jam, you just had an off day.

Although Fitness notebooks do work for keeping track of your WODs and results, there are now actual CrossFit journals that are specialized just for us CrossFitters.

Recovery Aids

The largely forgotten aspect of CrossFit is recovery.

We’ve probably never met in real life. Odds are we never will.

We don’t know anything about you, dear reader.

But we can almost guarantee that at some point you asked your CrossFit coach, “I feel like I’m plateauing, how do I start to improve again?”, and they’ve replied with, “You need to focus on recovery. More sleep, more protein, roll out, work on flexibility, etc., etc.”

Then you’ve vigorously nodded your head and agreed with what they’re saying only to go home, eat a tub of ice cream, and pass out on the couch at 3 am while watching reruns of CSI: Miami.

If you’re serious about CrossFit, recovery is almost as important as the workout itself.

But sometimes it is tough to get enough sleep and find the space to properly roll out your muscles.

There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day.

We at WOD Recovery Rx want to help with that.

Ask for some 1000mg Hemp-Derived CBD Oil in your stocking this Christmas.

It enhances body recovery between workouts and helps your muscles relax to get a better sleep.

Skipping Rope

The skipping rope is the swiss-army knife of CrossFit.

You can use it to warm up. If you’re feeling particularly perky, you can use it to cool down.

At the end of an awful WOD, you can even use it to give yourself 20 lashings as punishment for your poor performance.

Going away on vacation? Don’t worry, just pack your skipping rope away in your carry-on luggage and get in a quick, intense skipping workout in the airport terminal before getting on the plane!

Everyone sitting around you will really respect your dedication to physical health, and totally not hate you for getting all sweaty and stinky directly before entering an inescapable small metal tube with them for 4 hours!

Your family is dangling off the edge of a cliff in your car and need something long and strong to pull them up, saving them from certain doom?

Skipping rope.

Your friend, Cowboy Al, has lost control of his herd of cows and needs someone to wrangle them back into their pen, but UH OH, there aren’t any lassos lying around?

Luckily your CrossFit bag is in your car, and your skipping rope is on hand.

Really, the possibilities are endless.

Do yourself, and your family and cowboy friends, a favor. Get a skipping rope.

Weight Belt

So now you have the Olympic lifting shoes.

You’re recovering properly with foam rolling, sleep, and proper eating and supplements.

You keep track of every WOD in your journal religiously.

But you seem to have hit another plateau.

To be fair, this plateau is much higher than your old ones used to be.

You’re now in the upper 5% of CrossFitters everywhere. But there is only so much your body can do.

At some point, it seems like you need an artificial hand to keep hitting personal records in the deadlift and squat.

The weight belt is that artificial hand.

It stabilizes your spine and core while lifting very heavy things, helping you focus more on the actual lifting of the thing than the support.

Also, after hitting a new PR in any given exercise, you can hoist the belt over your head while dancing around and blasting the John Cena theme song like you just won a WWE Championship.

All in all, a pretty good accessory.
